SMUworks Academic Application:

Program Details:

SMUworks is a bursary-based student employment program that benefits students, faculty, and staff alike.

These positons not only provide valuable work experience for the students, but also helps them gain experience in the job application and interview process.

All positions are posted on HireSMU for students to apply. Faculty & staff who receive a SMUworks bursary will interview at least three eligible applicants.

How much is the Bursary for?

Undergraduate Positions: Successful applications will receive up to a maximum of $3528 per job based on $11.20 per hour, which includes 4% vacation pay, to a maximum of 15 hours per week for 21 weeks.

Graduate Positions: Successful applications will receive up to a maximum of $3843. This is based on $12.20 per hour, which includes 4% vacation pay, to a maximum of 15 hours per week for 21 weeks.

How will I find out if I've been approved?

Faculty & Staff will be informed of the bursary decisions by the Faculty & Staff Application Decisions date indicated above. Successful applicants will receive notice of approved funding and allotment of hours.

Who Can I Hire?

You are welcome to encourage students to apply for your opportunity via HireSMU if they are eligible.

Student eligibility criteria:
  • Currently registered in a degree or diploma program at Saint Mary's for both fall & winter academic semesters
  • Demonstrate a financial need
  • Have good academic standing (GPA 1.7+)
  • Attend a SMUworks Resume & Cover Letter Workshop from Career Services
  • Submit a resume and cover letter on HireSMU

How To Hire a Student:

After students have applied on HireSMU by the Student Academic Application Deadline above, all eligible student applications will be forwarded to you, the bursary recipient.

You are required to conduct a formal interview with at least three eligible applicants.

Once the interviews have been conducted, you are asked to inform Financial Aid & Awards of the name and student number (A#) of the successful student, as well as the names of the candidates you interviewed who were not successful.

How do I pay my new student employee?

Payroll paperwork must be submitted the first week of employmentto Financial Aid & Awards (MM108). 

The following forms need to be completed:

  • Fixed Remuneration Form and Casual Employee Action Form
  • TD1 Personal Tax Credits Return
  • TD1 Nova Scotia Personal Tax Credits Return

This can be found on the Payroll Cut off Schedule. Please keep track of the student's hours in order to ensure that the student only works the number of hours you were approved for.

How do I get reimbursed?

New for SMUworks Academic 2016/2017: Reimbursement will no longer be required at the end of each SMUworks session. Grant funding will be automatically utilised to pay the students SMUworks salary on a bi-weekly basis. Any top-up wage or hours above the SMUworks limit will be charge to the departmental budget indicated on the SMUworks form.

Graduate Positions: Successful applications will receive up to a maximum of $5947.50. This is based on $12.20 per hour, which includes 4% vacation pay, to a maximum of 32.5 hours per week for 15 weeks.

Employer Cost: Amounts in excess of the bursary and the 8% mandatory employer costs will be the responsibility of the faculty/ staff bursary recipient.

How do I get reimbursed?

To obtain reimbursement for the amount for which you were approved, a Departmental Claim Form must be submitted to Marcia Kissner, Financial Services, after the program has completed, by the Faculty & Staff Department Claim Form Deadline above for the summer session.
